The ten oldest Monasteries of East Sikkim, which are situated all across the Gangtok and Pakyong districts are mentioned below
- OLD RUMTEK MONASTERY 1734 A.D - Karmachokhor Thubtenling or Old Rumtek Monastery is the oldest monastery in the Gangtok district in the eastern jurisdiction of Sikkim. It was established by Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal in 1734 AD. This is a Kagyu sect monastery.
- KATHOG DORJEDEN MONASTERY 1840 A.D - In the ranking of the 2nd oldest monastery in East Sikkim comes Kathog Dorjeden Monastery in the Pakyong district in east Sikkim. It was founded by the great saint Kathog Kuntu Zangpo in the year 1840. This is a Nyingma sect monastery.
- ENCHEY MONASTERY 1840 A.D - Enchey Sangag Rabtenling - This is the 2nd oldest monastery in East Sikkim. It is in the Gangtok district and was founded by Drubthob Karpo the flying White Saint from the west in the year 1840. This monastery is also a Nyingma sect's monastery.
- RINAK MONASTERY 1841 A.D - Paljor Phuntshog - This Kagyu monastery was established in 1841 by Kongchog Gyaltshen. It is currently in the Pakyong district. This holds the stand of 3rd oldest monastery in the east Sikkim region.
- SIMIG MONASTERY 1843 A.D - In the Aritar village at the top of the hillock, this Nyingma monastery was built in the year 1843 by Ralchen Wosel Dorje. Currently, it falls under the Pakyong district in East Sikkim.
- PATHING MATSANG MONASTERY 1860 A.D - Pathing Matsang Rinchhen Tse Gonpa was established by Lharib Dawa in 1860. This Nyingma monastery was remodeled and reconstructed in 2005, as it was badly affected by the earthquake in 1982.
- LINGDOK TSANGKHAR MONASTERY 1862 A.D - In Lindok village, adjacent to the Pangthang area of Gangtok city, this monastery was established by Lam Dadue. Lam Dadue was a descendant of Lam Thiley, who resettled the Sakyong Monastery in this village in 1862. This is a Kagyupa sect's site.
- RAY MINDU KATENLING MONASTERY 1873 A.D - The Kagyu followers found this monastery in 1873 at Rumtek. Lepcha people are the major followers of this temple.
- PABYUK MONASTERY 1875 A.D - Ralchen Kalzang Chopel found this beautiful monastery in Pabyuk-Naitam village in East Sikkim in 1875. This is also a Kagyu sect's monastery. This monastery holds an annual mask dance during the winter months.
- TSANGEK MONASTERY 1888 A.D - Lama Tsewang Galpo is the founder of this monastery in Pakyong district. It was established in 1888 AD as a Drukpa Kagyu pilgrim site. Just a few kilometers drive from Pakyong town will lead you to this pristine monastery.
