North Sikkim is surrounded by high mountains on three sides in the east, west, and south and by the Tibetan plateau region to the northern boundaries. East Sikkim shares a boundary with Bhutan and the Chumbi valley of Tibet to the east; thus the birds of East Sikkim have similar bird habitat and birding experience as that of Bhutan. Birding in East Sikkim can be done throughout the year as the roads are well connected through Rangpo and Gangtok. In most places, birding in the eastern Himalayas are avoided during the monsoon, but here in the east Sikkim district, birdwatching can be carried on at any time of the year.

Maenam and Tendong are the two major hilltops, surrounding which the associated birds of South Sikkim are diversified. From the lower elevations of 1,000 ft to a mid-high elevation of 10,000 ft, these forest lands are distributed. So, birding in South Sikkim also generates a fairly handsome list. The best birding season in south Sikkim could be Spring-summer when rhododendrons bloom.

West Sikkim shares its border with Nepal along the Singalila and Khangchendzonga ridge. The varied vegetation of the Khangchendzonga landscape creates diversity in the birds of west Sikkim. Birding tours or birdwatching tours in west Sikkim are done from Pelling and Yuksom complex. Birding in west Sikkim can be conducted throughout the year, but in drier autumn winter, and spring months get the best birding experiences.
